There’s no question that cats love to climb. Vertical space in the form of cat trees and cat shelves is critical to providing an enriched environment for indoor cats. The Cat Ladder addresses this need in a way that’s creative, functional, and beautiful – and most of all, it lends itself to endless possibilities in any home of any size.
I’ve had a catification challenge in my dining room/living room for many years. We have a large floor to ceiling cat tree in the corner near the sliding glass door and next to the dining room cabinet. Allegra and Ruby both like to hang out on the cat tree, and Allegra in particular also likes to hang out on the top of the dining cabinet (there’s a cat bed on top of the cabinet in the far corner.)
The problem arose when Ruby, who can be a bit of a brat, occasionally didn’t like the idea of Allegra peacefully relaxing on top of the dining room cabinet. The cabinet lacks on “off ramp” on the far side. The only way for Allegra to get off is to jump to the dining room table. It’s doable, but it’s quite a distance, and landing on the hard surface is going to be increasingly hard on her joints as she gets older.
I had debated placing a large cat tree on the far side of the dining room cabinet, but hadn’t found anything that wouldn’t completely overwhelm the relatively small space. I had considered shelves to provide a “stairway” from the top of the dining cabinet all the way to the sofa, but I didn’t like the idea of drilling holes into my walls without knowing for sure whether the girls would use the shelves.
Enter the Cat Ladder! These beautifully designed ladders come in 6 different sizes, from three to eight steps. They come in three different wood finishes and are also available unfinished. You also have a choice of four different carpet colors. The carpet pads attach with velcro strips and can be replaced if needed.
The Cat Ladder does require some assembly, but the instructions are incredible detailed with full color photographs. With my history of panicking when I see the words “some assembly required,” I confess to asking a friend to help, but once she put the first step on the rail, I realized just how simple assembly is: The rails come with the screws already drilled in, so all you have to do is push the step into the groove, tighten the screw with a screwdriver, attach the second rail, and you’re done!
I simply leaned the Cat Ladder against the side of our dining room cabinet. The ladder is completely secure this way, and could not possibly be knocked over, even if the girls were to race up and down at full speed. The Cat Ladder also comes with a mounting block that can be drilled into a wall for placement.
Within seconds of putting the Cat Ladder up, Allegra went to explore, as you can see in the video below. Ruby followed quickly.
I love everything about the Cat Ladder. It solved our longstanding catification issue. I love that it’s easily moved, offering lots of flexibility for placement, and to change things up. It’s a gorgeous piece of furniture, and best of all, the girls are using it every single day.
