Review: The True Tails of Baker and Taylor

baker-and-taylor

If there’s a better combination than cats and books, I don’t know what that would be. In The True Tails of Baker and Taylor: The Library Cats Who Left Their Pawprints on a Small Town…and the World, former librarian Jan Louch (with Lisa Rogak) shares the remarkable story of two Scottish Fold cats and the people around the world whose lives were touched by them.

Baker and Taylor first took up residence at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden, Nevada in 1983. Baker was named because he slept in a box from book distributor Baker & Taylor. When the librarians realized that Taylor needed a friend, it was only logical to name the second cat Taylor. Images of the cats were eventually used on the company’s posters, tote bags and calendars, which made them famous at library and book conventions around the world.

Visitors to the library soon fell in love with the two cats. Baker and Taylor became feline celebrities, and the library became a travel destination for cat lovers from around the country. School children wrote letters to the cats and sent presents. Keep in mind that all of this happened long before Instagram, Facebook and YouTube – an aspect of the book that I found particularly fascinating.

This is a story about the cats and how they became famous, but it’s also a story of one woman’s life in a small town. It offers a behind the scenes look at what working in a library was like back then, and how technology changed the profession. Interspersed with “interviews” with other library cats from around the country, this book takes the reader back to a simpler time.

This charming and delightful book is a joy for cat and book lovers alike.

The True Tails of Baker and Taylor is available from Amazon* and everywhere books are sold.
