June is Adopt-a-Cat Month. What Can You Do to Help?

Each spring during kitten season, thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats already in shelters and foster homes across the country. The American Humane Association has designated June as Adopt-a-Cat Month® to help find these cats permanent homes.

Shelters and rescue groups across the country can use your help, even if you can’t adopt right now. Here are a few ways you can help find homes for cats during Adopt-a-Cat month (and every month):

  • Donate. Contact your favorite shelter or rescue group, and find out what they need most. Money will always be welcome, but rescue organizations can often use goods such as towels and linens, food, toys, and more.
  • Educate yourself and others about behavior problems. Far too many cats are surrendered to shelters because of behavior problems that could have been solved, often with very little effort.
  • Volunteer. Volunteer to socialize cats at your local shelter. Become a foster parent. Help with adoption events. Assist with planning fundraisers.
  • Share adoptable cats on your social media networks.
  • Donate your talent. If you’re a photographer, volunteer to photograph cats at your local rescue group. Better photos increase a cat’s chance to be adopted. If you’re a writer, offer to write a newsletter for a rescue group.

Meet two cats who are looking for their forever homes this month

Pretty dilute tortie Audrey and her sister Grace came to Feline Foundation of Greater Washington in early 2012 with another sister and 2 brothers after their original family decided they had too many cats and brought them to an overcrowded urban shelter. The girls were adopted in April 2012 and returned to the rescue group two years later.

These two are the best of friends. They are constantly together, they eat together, run and chase each other through the house like acrobats and even spend hours side by side under the bed covers napping and whispering kitty secrets to each other. The girls love their scratching post, and love to be talked to. They are gentle and loving and good about toenail trimming. If you work from home, take note: Audrey has loved lying by the computer keyboard since she was a tiny kitten–she will leave Grace to her own devices if there’s desk work to be done! These girls MUST be adopted together.
