If you’re reading The Conscious Cat, you probably already have an interest in holistic modalities. I believe in an integrative approach to medicine, both for myself and for cats (and dogs.) The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) at the National Institutes of Health, defines integrative medicine as “combining mainstream medical therapies and CAM therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.” In other words, integrative medicine lets you pick the best of both worlds.

Navigating the world of holistic therapies can be daunting, especially for pet parents who are new to the concept. Award winning pet-journalist Amy Shojai offers a comprehensive guide to natural and holistic therapies in her newly updated New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats. First published in 1999, this updated version offers information about herbal medicine, acupuncture and acupressure, homeopathy, flower essences, energy modalities and more. Shojai provides an explanation for each therapy, and each section features input from from holistic veterinarians.

Shojai also covers common health and behavior problems and offers solutions from a panel of experts in holistic therapies. I particularly enjoyed the “Healing Instinct” sidebars in this section of the book. They provide fascinating explanation how in many cases, animals instinctively know how to correct or treat a problem. A “Call the Vet” sidebar explains when to seek help for each individual problem.

This information packed guide makes a great addition to every cat guardian’s cat care library.
