The Cat Sitter mystery series, featuring Dixie Hemingway, a pet sitter who lives on one of the Florida keys, has been a favorite of mine ever since the first book in the series came out eight years ago. The series was originally written by Blaize Clement. Her son, John Clement, continued the series after her death in 2011. Blaize had been collaborating on plots and characters for future novels with John.

In The Cat Sitter and the Canary, Dixie stumbles upon a dead body in her client’s front hall. The body  has a note stuck to his lapel. Of course, Dixie starts to look for clues immediately, but when she sees what’s written on the note, she realizes that this case is going to be unlike everything she has ever experienced. And this is not the only murder. The plot becomes increasingly twisted, and as Dixie continues to try to find out who did it, her own life may be in danger.

I could not put this book down. In addition to wanting to know what happened next, I loved visiting the lush tropical setting and visiting with familiar characters.  For me, reading this series is almost as good as a mid-winter trip to Florida. Dixie has become more mature, and appears to have found happiness with new boyfriend Ethan, even though her former love is getting married.

The book features a perfect blend of great writing, a captivating plot, and engaging characters. If you’re already a fan of Dixie Hemingway, you’re not going to want to miss this installment in the series. And if you’re new to the series, you’re in for a treat. The Cat Sitter and the Canary contains enough backstory so it can be read as a standalone book, but why not treat yourself to the entire series!

I was utterly delighted that this quote, from my review of a previous book in the series, is featured on the back cover: “I love everything about this series: the tropical setting, the thoroughly likeable heroine, and the masterfully woven plot lines. A great read for anytime of year, but especially enjoyable during these cold early spring days that make you wonder whether it will ever get warm again!”

The Cat Sitter and the Canary is available from Amazon and everywhere books are sold.
