Mews and Nips: Reading Program Helps Shy Cats Bond With People

An innovative program at a Clintonville, Ohio shelter is bringing shy cats out of their shells. The Crime Cats Mystery Program at the Cat Welfare Association is the brainchild of self-published author Wolfgang Parker, whose middle grade books star two crime-solvers based on cats in his Clintonville neighborhood. First through eight graders spend 30 minutes a week reading to the cats in the “shy cat room.” Volunteer coordinator Laurel Bidwell said the response from the cats was encouraging. “When I first went into the ‘shy cat’ room, the cats would scatter like ants,” she said. Now, the cats are much more comfortable around people. For the full story and some wonderful photos, please read The Columbus Dispatch.

If you missed any of the stories featured on the Conscious Cat this week, here’s a recap: on Sunday, I talked about the benefits of unplugging, on Monday, we provided information on plants that are poisonous to cats, on Tuesday, we reviewed Dr. Elsey’s new Clean Protein™ line of food, on Wednesday, we offered litter box solutions for senior cats, on Thursday, we ran a first hand account of cleaning cat urine from carpet with OdorKlenz products, and on Friday, we reviewed Dog as My Doctor, Cat as My Nurse.

We previously introduced you to the Jackson Galaxy Space Station from Petmate. I thought you’d enjoy this video of Allegra having a blast with this toy.

After watching from a distance for a while, Ruby got in on the action, too.

Have a great weekend!
