Instead of our usual Conscious Cat Sunday feature, we’re bringing you a special giveaway today – because the Alpaca Cat Bed Mat from Wrapt Cats is all about conscious living. This beautiful mat is handmade from a beautiful white alpaca who is living the great life with the rest of her herd out in the Pennsylvania countryside. Her shorn fleece (shaved from the back of the alpaca, the animal is not harmed in the process) was worked directly into a rug in an ecologically friendly way using only soap, water, and a whole lot of lady powered friction.

The color is a natural off-white. The mat is super soft. This is not a skin, it is only the fleece from the alpaca. She simply got a nice haircut! This alpaca rug can look great on a sofa, your bed, or wherever your cats love to lounge. It would also work nicely in the bottom of a basket or on a cat tree landing. It’s a wonderful choice for kittens in need of warmth and comfort. Creator Kathy Bennett also uses it to line a pet carrier. “I like to take something from home when we visit the vet,” she says, “and this rug is a perfect choice.”

Kathy is proud that all the pet rugs are made with raw fleeces that have been procured from American small farms. “These are generally family run farms that have dedicated their lives to ancient traditions of nurturing and raising sheep and other farm animals as their lives passion,” says Kathy. “Many are considered rare breeds that are making a comeback in the American culture.” Kathy finds a raw beauty in these fleeces. “Once you have touched and sensed these animals’ gift of fleece, you will be forever changed.” And she says, she’s finding that cats really love wool, to the point where she says “I am beginning to believe it is instinctual.”

The rug measures 30 inches x 22 inches. The rugs are easy to care for: simply shake our regularly, and spot clean small stains by dabbing with a soft cloth dipped in hydrogen peroxide. They can be hand washed in cold water. Let them soak in a standard bathtub, then massage the fibers, and if needed, use shampoo to clean. Then simply drain the tub, fold the rug and press out any remaining water. The rugs can be machine washed on the gently cycle but shouldn’t be run through the spin cycle. Dry flat on toweling.
